About Openwaters Foundation
Openwaters Foundation is a Southern California non-profit dedicated to helping parents—fathers, mothers, and family mentors—strengthen their bond with children ages 5 to 15 through unforgettable deep sea fishing trips to Catalina Island. Departing from AHRA-AHN Sportfishing, 555 Pico Ave, Long Beach, CA 90802, each trip is designed to connect families with the ocean, create meaningful time together, and introduce kids to the joy and excitement of sportfishing.
Openwaters Foundation believes that shared outdoor experiences play a powerful role in a child’s emotional, social, and mental development. By immersing families in the adventure of open water, parents and children build trust, communication, and confidence—skills that last far beyond the boat ride. These deep sea excursions offer families a rare opportunity to unplug, learn to catch and cook fish together, and strengthen their relationship in a positive, hands-on environment.
Operating year-round, Openwaters Foundation provides free or sponsored deep sea fishing experiences for families across Los Angeles County and Orange County. Most trips run from spring through early fall, giving children the chance to fish during prime Catalina Island seasons. All outings take place on U.S. Coast Guard–licensed charter vessels, ensuring a fun, safe, and professionally guided experience for every participant.
Every Openwaters trip is intentionally crafted to encourage teamwork, patience, and shared discovery. Parents and kids learn casting, baiting, and fish handling together while exploring the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. These moments—celebrating a child’s first catch, watching dolphins swim past the boat, or preparing freshly caught fish—become powerful memories that strengthen family bonds for years to come.
Beyond fishing education, Openwaters Foundation also teaches environmental awareness and ocean stewardship. Families learn about marine life, coastal ecosystems, and sustainable fishing practices, helping children understand the importance of protecting California’s coastal waters. By fostering respect for nature and inspiring a love of the ocean, Openwaters Foundation creates lasting impact that extends far beyond Catalina Island.

Deep Sea Fishing Catalina Island
Catalina Island is one of Southern California’s premier deep-sea fishing destinations, where fathers and children on Openwaters Foundation trips encounter an impressive variety of fish species that make every outing both exciting and educational. The nutrient-rich waters surrounding Catalina attract prized game fish such as Yellowtail, the foundation’s primary target, known for their strength and powerful runs that create unforgettable shared moments—especially when caught using live bait like sardines or squid. Families also commonly hook Calico Bass, Barracuda, Bonito, Sheephead, and Rockfish, each species offering unique teaching opportunities about habitats, bait techniques, and ocean ecosystems. During warmer seasons, the area may even produce surprise catches like Dorado or Bluefin Tuna, adding to the thrill of fishing around the island. Together, parents and children learn hands-on skills, build confidence, and develop a deeper connection with the vibrant marine life that makes Catalina Island one of the most celebrated fishing spots in California.
Frequently Asked Questions
What types of fish can we catch around Catalina Island?
Catalina Island offers a wide variety of fish, including Yellowtail, Calico Bass, Barracuda, Bonito, Sheephead, and multiple species of Rockfish. During warmer months, anglers may also encounter Dorado or even Bluefin Tuna when currents push offshore species closer to the island.
Do I need prior fishing experience to go on a charter?
No experience is required. Charter crews teach beginners how to bait hooks, cast, set the drag, identify fish, and safely handle their catch. It’s a beginner- and family-friendly experience.
What should I bring for a deep sea fishing trip?
Sunscreen and sunglasses
A hat or light jacket
Long Sleeve Shirt/Windbreaker
Fishing License (16 years old and over)
A cooler to take fish home
Cash for Food & Drinks. For fish cleaning & crew tips
Is it safe for kids to go deep sea fishing?
Yes, kids ages 5 and up are welcomed on Catalina trips. Crews are trained to support children, teach them basic skills, and ensure safety at all times.
Will I get seasick?
Some people do experience seasickness, especially first-time passengers. Taking motion sickness medication the night before when you go to bed and again 1 hour before arriving on the boat, eating light, and staying on deck with fresh air helps significantly.
What is the boat ride like from Long Beach to Catalina?
The trip is typically 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on weather and conditions. Along the way, passengers often see dolphins, sea lions, and beautiful Pacific Ocean scenery.
Do I need a fishing license?
Adults 16 years and older need a valid California fishing license. Kids under 16 do not need one. Many charter boats can help direct you to purchase a license online before boarding.
Is equipment included, or do I need to bring my own?
Openwaters Foundation charters provide rods, reels, tackle, and bait. Live bait such as sardines or squid is typically included. You are welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer.
Do we get to keep the fish we catch?
Yes, most fish caught can be kept within legal limits and size regulations. Charters often offer fish cleaning services so families can take home fillets ready to cook.
What happens if we don’t catch anything?
While fishing is never guaranteed, Catalina Island is known for consistent action. Captains work hard to find active spots, move frequently, and use the best bait available to maximize success, especially when targeting Yellowtail, Calico Bass, or Rockfish.
